Semantic technologies for the utilisation of production metadata for the multi platform distribution

The dwerft – linked metadata for media is a regional research alliance for innovative media technologies at the traditional location of Potsdam-Babelsberg.

The vision of dwerft is to link the whole production and distribution value chain for content in the film film business by lossless storage and intelligent cross-linking of metadata in a semantically supported database, the Linked Media Data Cloud (LMDC).
In six subprojects the project partners will develop a variety of innovative media tech solutions for the digital film production: based on algorithms and AI for picture and speech recognition, blockchain for accounting services, file-based media cloud workflows, automated subtitling services for crossmedia distribution, tools for non-fiction productions as well as smart interfaces for external archives and editorial databases.
The project and the idea behind it were already launched in 2014. It takes place from 2018 to 2021 in rich of tradition Potsdam-Babelsberg and is part of the MediaTech Hub Potsdam, which was the only media hub that became part of the de:hub initiative of the German federal ministry of economics in 2017.

Potsdam-Babelsberg connects cinematic tradition with an innovative future: Besides the world’s oldest film studio there are over 100 start ups, medium-sized businesses and established players of film and TV located and operative. The Film University Babelsberg „Konrad Wolf“ and the „Hasso Plattner Institute” complete the profile of the business location. An ideal environment for new technologies and services in the area between media and IT.

The dwerft will be one of the biggest R&D projects in the area of media technology in the upcoming years in Germany. A total sum of around 9M Euro will be invested, including a subsidy of 4M Euro of Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
